Diplodocus
Diplodocus was a super long dinosaur that lived about 150 million years ago. It had a very long neck and an even longer tail, and it used its pencil-like teeth to strip leaves from plants. Despite its huge size, it was lighter than many other giant sauropods.21

Diplodocus had about 80 vertebrae in its tail alone, which made up almost one third of its entire body length.1
Its tail was very long and whip-like, and scientists think it might have been used to make loud cracking sounds to scare off predators.2
Diplodocus had narrow, pointed bony spines lining its back, which may have helped support its body.2
Ligaments running from its hip to the back of the neck helped Diplodocus hold its neck horizontally without using much muscle effort.2
An Apatosaurus of similar size would have weighed two to three times more than a Diplodocus, because Diplodocus was lightly built.1
Diplodocus lived in a hot, dry environment like a savannah, alongside dinosaurs such as Allosaurus, Brontosaurus, and Stegosaurus.2

?How big was Diplodocus?
Diplodocus was about 24 to 26 metres (79 to 85 ft) long and weighed around 12 to 15 metric tons (13 to 17 short tons). That is as long as two school buses parked end to end.42
?What did Diplodocus eat?
Diplodocus was an herbivore that ate soft plants and leaves from trees. It used its small, peg-like teeth to strip leaves off branches.24
?When did Diplodocus live?
Diplodocus lived during the Late Jurassic period, about 152 to 145 million years ago.24
?Where was Diplodocus found?
Diplodocus fossils have been found in North America, especially in the mid-western United States, in rocks of the Morrison Formation.42
?Was Diplodocus bigger than T. rex?
Yes, Diplodocus was much longer than T. rex. While T. rex was about 12 metres (40 ft) long, Diplodocus could reach 26 metres (85 ft) or more. But T. rex was heavier and more heavily built.42
?Did Diplodocus have feathers?
No, Diplodocus did not have feathers. It had scaly skin, and some related dinosaurs had narrow, pointed spines on their tails and backs, like an iguana.42
?How fast could Diplodocus run?
Probably up to about 13 km/h (8 mph), about as fast as a kid running fast. This is an estimate from its size. Diplodocus was very big and heavy, so it moved slowly, like an elephant.2
?Could Diplodocus swim?
There is no direct evidence that Diplodocus could swim, but like most large land animals, it probably could wade through water if needed.2
?Why did Diplodocus have a long neck?
Diplodocus had a long neck to reach high and low vegetation without moving its huge body much. This helped it save energy.2

Fenaande: Some people think Diplodocus held its neck straight up like a giraffe.
Goonga: Scientists now believe that Diplodocus held its neck horizontally, supported by strong ligaments, not upright.2
